Something COOL I’m Proud Of
It was a joy and privilege to direct Kelli Tager in the direction of Joyce Freaking Carol Oates’ newest work: Flint Kill Creek.
If you’ve never had the experience of reading Joyce Carol Oates, I strongly recommend it! This collection is masterful on levels I cannot properly articulate. The order of the stories, specific words used in vaguely unusual ways throughout the book—for example, look for how and when she uses the word “clot”—the details that are the same, but not, in different stories. The same house—same front door, same neighbors—shows up in several different cities… I have a million more questions, but that’s the best part of this book: there are untold layers to it!
Fun fact, part of this book was recorded in Detroit—one of several settings in the book—as I was on a roadtrip but worked with Kelli from my hotel room. It felt tiny but very cool…
Read this! Seriously.
Noteworthy Stats
How it Started
On my first book as a live engineer/proofer, my narrator received 80 pickups back from the publisher. I was horrified but she assured me “anything under 100 is good.”
On our second book together, she received 20 pickups.
On our third, “The Power of Instinct,” she received 6 pickups… and the book snagged a SOVAS nomination!
How it’s going
My narrators average ~10 pickups per book now
I’ve said since the beginning that my goal is a zero-pickup full-length book, and I’ve come VERY close:
For the Multicast “Wake Up and Open Your Eyes,” Kelli Tager received ZERO pickups!
For her solo book “Eight Nights to Win Her Heart,” with runtime 10:22, Kelli received THREE pickups!
